What Is Affiliate Online Marketing: Empowering Your Holistic Journey
In this post, we will trace the history of affiliate marketing and explain precisely what it is and how it works. By the end of this post, you will want to know how to benefit from affiliate marketing.
Whether you are an affiliate or a merchant, the targeted question is what affiliate online marketing is. I am here to help answer this question for you.
If you have researched marketing on the internet, you have likely encountered the term affiliate marketing at least once.
You may have yet to explore the term or understand it. The following post will help you gain a good understanding of it.
At its core, affiliate marketing is a symbiotic relationship. Here’s how it works:
- The Affiliate (That’s You!): You become an affiliate by partnering with companies or brands. Your mission? Promote their products or services through your blog, social media, or website.
- The Commission: When someone clicks on your unique affiliate link and makes a purchase, you earn a commission. It’s like receiving a high-five from the universe every time someone buys through your recommendation.
- Win-Win-Win: The company gains a new customer, the customer discovers a valuable product, and you—the affiliate—earn a slice of the pie. Everyone wins!
What Is Affiliate Online Marketing
Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based advertising that pays for performance. In this type of advertising, the purchaser pays the advertiser only when the advertising result is measurable.
This type of advertising is becoming more prominent with the spread of the internet. Now, Google Analytics and many other apps. Make it possible for a company to know the user response to its advertisements.
In affiliate marketing, the company hires one or more affiliates. These affiliates do the marketing for the company on the net. Based on the number of visitors or customers. They bring it in through their marketing efforts.
The company pays the affiliates. Put simply, you can make money online when you are paid by a business to promote their service, product, or website.
From a company perspective, you can hire someone else to market whatever you are selling and pay them based on the results, which is the number of customers they can attract through marketing.
Affiliate marketing works through four players:
- The merchant is also known as the brand or retailer.
- The network that contains the offers an affiliate can select from. And that also takes care of the payments to the affiliate.
- The affiliates themselves are also known as the publishers. And, of course, the customers.
- As it has expanded, affiliate marketing has become increasingly complex, with another tier of players, such as super-affiliates and affiliate management agencies, coming in.
Many people often confuse affiliate marketing with referral marketing. It is a common enough mistake to make.
This is especially true when you consider both types of marketing. Retailers use third parties to attract visitors and customers.
But the critical difference between the two:
- In affiliate marketing, sales are driven by financial motivations.
- In referral marketing, personal relationships. And the trust therein used to drive sales.
Now, compared to other marketing strategies. Affiliate marketing still holds a low profile.
Advertisers need to pay attention to this marketing strategy. Other methods, such as search engine optimization and website syndication, capture their attention.
Yet, many e-retailers still do not consider affiliate marketing. A significant part of their marketing strategies.
The History Of Affiliate Marketing
Origin
Revenue sharing or paying commissions for a business you refer to is a concept introduced previously. In fact, this concept came into being way before the advent of the internet and affiliate marketing.
The transition of revenue share principles to mainstream e-commerce began in November 1994, approximately four years after the World Wide Web was implemented.
The concept of affiliate marketing on the internet was created, implemented, and patented by William J. Tobin.
The man who created PC Flowers and Gifts. PC Flowers and Gifts was launched in 1989. The Prodigy Network operated in that service for seven years until 1996.
By 1993, PC Flowers & Gifts had generated a sales amount that exceeded $ 6 million per year on the service of Prodigy Network.
In 1998, PC Flowers & Gifts created a business model of paying a commission on sales to the Prodigy Network.
In 1994, Tobin ventured onto the internet with a PS Flowers and Gifts beta version in conjunction with IBM, which owned half of Prodigy.
A commercial version of the PC Flowers and Gifts website was launched within a year. The company also had 2,600 affiliate marketing partners on the Internet.
Realizing the value of the business model he started, Tobin sent in an application for patents on tracking and affiliate marketing on January 22, 1996, and was issued U.S. Patent number 6,141,666 on October 31, 2000.
Tobin took it even further, receiving a Japanese Patent (4021941) in 2007 and a U.S. patent of 7,505,913 in 2009 for his affiliate marketing and tracking work.
In 1998, PC Flowers and Gifts conducted a merger with Fingerhut, along with Federated Department Stores.
One of the first innovators in affiliate marketing was cyber erotica. Which had a cost-per-click program.
The innovation continued with CDNOW, which started the Buy Web program in November 1994.
CDNOW was inspired by the idea that websites with music could list or review albums that they felt visitors might be interested in buying.
The websites could offer a link. That would take prospective buyers to the CDNOW website. Where they could make their purchases.
This idea first emerged from conversations with Geffen Records, a music label that wanted to sell its artists’ music directly on its website.
However, they did not want to have to create this feature themselves. Instead, they talked to CDNOW about a program that would let CDNOW take care of the orders.
They discovered that CDNOW could link from the artist’s website to Geffen’s official website. This would bypass CDNOW’s homepage and go straight to the artist’s music page.
In July 1996, Amazon, via Amazon.com, started an associate program that allowed the associates to place text links or banners for individual books on their site.
The program also allowed them to link to the Amazon home page. When people who visited the associate’s site clicked through to Amazon and bought a book, Amazon paid the associate a commission.
Amazon was by no means the first company to offer such incentives as an affiliate program, but its program was the first to catch on. Eventually, it served as a business model for the other programs.
In February 2000, Amazon announced that it had been granted a patent on certain parts of an affiliate program. The application was submitted in June 1997.
This was before most affiliate programs came into being. But only after specific programs such as PC Flowers & Gifts.com. Which submitted its application in October 1994.
AutoWeb.com did the same in October 1995. BrainPlay.com/KBkids.com was created in January 1996, EPage in April 1996, and many others.
Historic Development
Affiliate Marketing has grown since the beginning of the Internet era when e-commerce websites were considered more fun marketing toys.
But it soon played a prominent role in businesses’ marketing plans. For some business-savvy professionals, it grew to be a more significant business than the existing offline business.
One report indicated that affiliate networks generated total sales of 2.16 billion in the United Kingdom in 2006.
In 2005, the estimates had hovered around the 1.35 billion mark. The research team at Marketing Sherpa.
The estimate was produced worldwide in 2006. Affiliates’ earnings came to around $6.5 billion in commissions and bounty.
The sources ranged from retail to gambling, telecom to education, travel and lead generation methods, and contextual advertising programs.
Affiliate marketing was most popular in sectors such as gambling. File sharing services, retail industries, and adult entertainment in 2006.
The three divisions experienced the highest level of growth. Were the cellular phone, financial, and travel sectors.
The entertainment/gaming and service sectors related to the internet (ISPs) followed behind these sectors.
Several of the affiliate solution providers anticipated receiving increased interest from marketers related to businesses and advertisers who want to use affiliate marketing as part of their marketing mix.
Web 2.0
Websites and/or services that are based on Web 2.0 concepts. Such as blogging and interactive communities. Have had a significant impact on the affiliate marketing world as well.
These platforms allowed improved communication between merchants and affiliates.
Thanks to Web 2.0 platforms, affiliate marketing channels have also been opened to writers, independent website owners, and bloggers.
Publishers who have low levels of web traffic. Use contextual ads to place affiliate ads on websites.
The way brands, ad networks, and companies present ads to visitors has also changed because of the advent of new media types. Let us take YouTube, for example.
Video makers on YouTube can embed ads through Google’s affiliate network.
Deceitful affiliates have begun to find it more difficult. To make money thanks to new advancements.
However, the art of deceit has never ceased to exist. So be careful on the internet and do your research.
Web 3.0
Web 3.0 represents the next iteration or phase of the evolution of the web/Internet. It could be as disruptive and represent a significant change in basic assumptions as Web 2.0.
Web 3.0 is built upon the core concepts of decentralization, openness, and excellent user utility.
It is an idea for a new iteration of the World Wide Web based on digital concepts covering blockchain technology, which incorporates concepts such as decentralization and token-based economics, such as NFTs, crypto, and the metaverse.
Some technologists and journalists have contrasted it with Web 2.0, in which they say data and content are centralized in a small group of companies sometimes referred to as “Big Tech.”
The term was coined in 2014 by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood, and in 2021, cryptocurrency enthusiasts, large technology companies, and venture capital firms expressed interest in it.
Why Should You Care?
Affiliate marketing can be worth caring about for several reasons:
- Passive Income Potential: Once you set up affiliate links on your platform (blog, website, social media), you can earn money passively. If people click on your links and make purchases, you can generate income without active involvement.
- Low Risk, High Reward: You don’t need to create a product or service yourself. Instead, you’re acting as a middleman, connecting customers with the products/services they want. If done right, the potential for earning can be significant without the overhead costs associated with creating your products.
- Flexibility: Affiliate marketing can be done from anywhere with an internet connection. Whether you’re a blogger, YouTuber, or Instagram influencer or run a niche website, you can integrate affiliate links into your content and earn income.
- Diverse Product Offerings: Affiliate programs exist for almost every niche and industry imaginable. Whether passionate about technology, fashion, fitness, or personal finance, you can find products/services to promote that align with your interests and audience.
- Scalability: As you build your audience and establish credibility, you can scale your affiliate marketing efforts by expanding your reach, creating more content, and diversifying your income streams.
- Learning Opportunity: Affiliate marketing teaches valuable skills such as content creation, audience engagement, and marketing strategies. These transferable skills can be applied to other endeavors or even a full-time career in digital marketing.
- Empowerment: Affiliate marketing empowers you to take control of your financial destiny. It’s not about luck; it’s about strategy and effort.
- Holistic Growth: As a holistic development enthusiast, you understand that growth isn’t limited to one area of life. Affiliate marketing aligns perfectly with this philosophy—nurturing mind, body, and wallet.

Hi Jamie, I enjoyed reading your article on what is affiliate online marketing. It was fascinating to learn of the history as related to PC Flowers and Gifts, which actually pre-dates the internet. I was not at all surprised that Amazon was also one of the first to get into affiliate marketing with its books. Hey Jenni! Glad you enjoyed the read. Thank you for leaving a comment! Many blessings to you!
So what would you say is the best landing page builder? I have in the past used clickfunnels but I am looking for a cheaper alternative.
I have also tried builderall because it has a landing page builder and a email autoresponder but the email autoresponder really left more to be desired. So now I’m back to the drawing board looking for yet another alternative….
Hi Thomas!
I would say the best landing page builder that is an alternative to Clickfunnels would be Mailchimp All-in-One Marketing Platform. You can start for free.
I hope this helps!
