How To Get Into Affiliate Marketing

This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase through my links, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend products, tools, and platforms that I personally use, trust, or believe will provide real value.

Learn how to get started with affiliate marketing using a real, structured approach. Includes step-by-step guidance, mistakes to avoid, and tools to build income online.

I didn’t come into affiliate marketing blind. I’ve been watching this space since the early 2000s.

I saw people building income online. I saw it working.
And deep down, I knew it was one of the few paths that could actually lead to freedom.

The problem wasn’t belief. The problem was getting it to work for me.

If you want to understand how this fits into building a complete, spiritually aligned online business, read this next: How to Build a Spiritually Aligned Online Business (Without Burnout)

My Real Journey With Affiliate Marketing

Understanding all the moving parts.
Staying consistent long enough to see results.
And, honestly, my impatience kept breaking my own progress.

I’ve had my Wealthy Affiliate account since 2016. That’s a decade of starting, stopping, learning, and trying again. Not because it didn’t work. But because life kept happening.

I had a full family life.
A husband.
Children.
Stepchildren.

And in the middle of building something online, I was also living a full, complex life offline. Then everything shifted.

My dad passed away in 2019.

My husband passed in 2020.

And the life I once knew… ended.

For the last several years, I’ve been navigating grief, rebuilding myself, and learning how to move forward without the structure I once had.

So, this journey wasn’t just about making money. It became about rebuilding my life.

Finding stability again.
Finding direction again.
And ultimately finding a way to be paid for being who I am and doing what I love.

At some point, I decided. Not casually. Not emotionally. But intentionally.

I was going to figure this out.

No more stopping.
No more circling the same starting line.

And that decision changed everything. Not because everything suddenly became easy. But because I finally understood this:

Affiliate marketing isn’t confusing. It’s structured.

And when you follow the structure consistently, even if the results start small—you begin to see what’s possible.

I haven’t made a massive income yet. But I’ve seen enough. Enough small wins. Enough proof. To know that this works.

And more importantly, To know that I’m closer now than I’ve ever been.

In this article, I’m going to walk you through exactly how affiliate marketing actually works, how I approached it, what slowed me down, and how you can build this the right way from the beginning without wasting years trying to piece it together.

How To Get Into Affiliate Marketing

What Affiliate Marketing Actually Is (Simple Explanation)

At its core, affiliate marketing is simple. You recommend something. Someone buys it through your link. You earn a commission That’s it.

While the concept is simple, the real difference comes from how you structure your content, position your recommendations, and build trust with the people you’re speaking to over time.

No inventory. No shipping. No customer service.

You’re not creating the product—you’re connecting people to something that already exists.

Affiliate marketing becomes powerful when it is approached as a long-term business model rather than a short-term tactic, because the real results come from consistency, content depth, and strategic positioning over time.

Here’s What That Looks Like in Real Life

Let’s say you write a blog post about your favorite books, tools, or products you actually use.

Inside that post, you include a special link—called an affiliate link.

When someone clicks that link and makes a purchase, you earn a percentage of the sale.

For example:

  • You recommend a book from Amazon
  • Someone clicks your link
  • They buy it
  • You get paid

The same thing applies to:

  • online platforms
  • digital tools
  • courses
  • lifestyle products

Anything that has an affiliate program.

Why This Works (Especially for You)

If you’re already:

  • writing
  • creating content
  • sharing your thoughts
  • recommending things naturally

You’re already doing the hard part.

Affiliate marketing just gives your voice a structure that pays you.

That’s the part most people miss.

It’s not about becoming a salesperson.

It’s about:

  • sharing what you actually use
  • helping people make decisions
  • and getting paid for the value you’re already giving

What Affiliate Marketing Is NOT

Let’s clear this up because this is where people get stuck:

It’s not:

  • fast money
  • passive on day one
  • throwing links everywhere and hoping something sticks

And it’s definitely not:

  • copying what everyone else is doing without understanding the system

The Real Truth

Affiliate marketing works.

But it works when you treat it like a system.

Not random effort. Not occasional posting. Not “trying it out.”

A system.

And once you understand that system—and actually follow it consistently—that’s when things start to shift.

Why Affiliate Marketing Made Sense for Me

Out of everything I could have pursued to make money online, affiliate marketing kept standing out to me.

Not because it was trendy.

But because it made sense.

I didn’t want to build something that required me to become someone I’m not.

I didn’t want to:

  • chase clients
  • depend on inconsistent opportunities
  • or constantly trade my time just to earn

I wanted something that could grow with me.

Something that allowed me to:

  • use my voice
  • share what I naturally connect with
  • and build income without losing myself in the process

Affiliate marketing gave me that path.

It Aligned With How I Naturally Move

I’ve always been someone who:

  • observes patterns
  • pays attention to what works
  • and shares what I learn

Whether it’s:

  • books
  • tools
  • ideas
  • or systems

I naturally recommend things that add value. Affiliate marketing simply gave it a structure. Instead of just sharing…

I could now:

  • build around what I share
  • Organize it into content
  • and connect it to income

It Offered Freedom Without Starting From Scratch

One of the biggest things that drew me in was this:

I didn’t have to create a product to get started. The products already exist. The systems already exist. The infrastructure is already built.

All I had to do was:

  • learn how it works
  • plug into the right platforms
  • and stay consistent

That lowered the barrier. And made it realistic.

But Let Me Be Honest

Even though it made sense… That didn’t mean it was easy.

Because understanding something and executing it consistently are two different things. And that’s where most people, including me, get stuck.

Not in the idea. But in the follow-through.

Why I Stayed With It Anyway

Even with the stops and starts…

Even with the delays…

I stayed with affiliate marketing because I saw enough proof to know it works.

Not overnight, not perfectly, but consistently.

And once I realized that the real difference wasn’t talent—it was structure and execution…

Everything started to shift.

How to Get Started With Affiliate Marketing (Step-by-Step)

If you’re starting from zero, you don’t need to do everything. You need to do the right things—in the right order.

Here’s exactly how to begin:

Step 1: Choose Your Focus (Not Just a “Niche”)

You don’t need to box yourself into one thing.

But you do need clarity.

Start with what you already talk about or are naturally drawn to.

For me, that includes:

  • personal growth
  • healing
  • business and income
  • creative expression

Your focus is simply the intersection of:

  • What you care about
  • What you already engage with
  • and what people are already searching for

You’re not guessing.

You’re aligning.

This is how you begin to monetize your gifts in a way that actually makes sense for your life.

Step 2: Choose 1–2 Affiliate Programs (Start Simple)

This is where most people go wrong. They sign up for everything… and build nothing. Start with 1–2 programs max.

Here are beginner-friendly options:

  • Amazon Associates — easy to use, wide range of products
  • Wealthy Affiliate — teaches you how actually to build the system
  • ShareASale / LTK — good for lifestyle and brand partnerships

My approach: Start with what’s easiest to integrate into your content.

You can expand later.

Step 3: Create Content That Actually Helps People

This is the real work. Not posting links, not selling. Helping.

Your content should:

  • answer real questions
  • solve real problems
  • guide real decisions

Examples:

  • “Best tools for starting a blog”
  • “How I improved my routine.”
  • “What I use to stay organized.”

Then, naturally, include your affiliate links where they make sense.

The rule: If the content is valuable, the link will convert.

This is where most people either build momentum or stall: intentional, structured content aligned with real search behavior will always outperform random posting over time.

Step 4: Place Your Links Strategically

Don’t scatter links everywhere, be intentional.

Best places to use affiliate links:

  • inside blog posts (most powerful)
  • email recommendations
  • Pinterest pins that lead to your blog

Inside your blog:

  • after explaining something
  • when recommending a tool
  • in resource sections

Not random, connected.

Step 5: Track What’s Working (And What’s Not)

This is where you separate effort from results.

Check:

  • which links get clicks
  • which content brings traffic
  • which posts actually convert

If something works, do more of it. If something doesn’t: adjust, don’t abandon

The Reality Most People Skip

This is not about doing everything perfectly.

It’s about:

  • choosing a direction
  • following a structure
  • and staying consistent long enough to see results

Because once something starts working…

You don’t start over.

You build on it.

Over time, this is how you start to build your own economy instead of depending on one source of income.

What Nobody Tells You About Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is simple to understand.

But it’s not simple to execute consistently.

And that’s the part most people don’t talk about.

Looking back, it wasn’t a lack of opportunity that slowed me down—it was the gap between knowing what to do and consistently executing it without interruption.

It Takes Longer Than You Expect

When I started, I didn’t fully understand the timeline.

I thought:

  • if I post consistently
  • if I use the right links
  • if I follow what others are doing

…I should see results quickly.

That wasn’t my reality.

It took time.

Not because it doesn’t work.

But because:

  • traffic takes time
  • trust takes time
  • and understanding what actually converts takes time

My First Real Mistake

One of my biggest mistakes early on was inconsistency.

I would:

  • start strong
  • get distracted
  • stop
  • then come back and try again

Each time restarting instead of building momentum. And that cycle delayed my results more than anything else.

Not lack of knowledge. Not lack of opportunity. Lack of consistent execution.

The Frustration Is Real

There were moments when I questioned if I was doing it right.

Moments where:

  • I wasn’t seeing results
  • I wasn’t getting traction
  • and nothing felt like it was connecting

That’s the phase where most people quit. Not because it doesn’t work. But it didn’t feel like it’s working yet.

What Finally Started Clicking

Things didn’t change because I found a secret.

They changed when I stopped treating this like something I “try”…

And started treating it like something I built.

I started:

  • focusing on structure instead of random content
  • staying consistent even when the results were small
  • paying attention to what actually worked

And those small wins started to stack.

The Truth Most People Avoid

You don’t need:

  • more information
  • more courses
  • or more strategies

You need:

  • consistency
  • structure
  • and patience long enough to let the system work

And Here’s Why I’m Still Doing This

Because I’ve seen enough to know this works.

Even if the results haven’t been massive yet.

Even if the process hasn’t been perfect.

I’ve seen:

  • small commissions
  • small traction
  • small proof

And that’s all you need to know, you’re on the right path.

Common Affiliate Marketing Mistakes to Avoid

A lot of people don’t fail because affiliate marketing doesn’t work. They fail because they approach it the wrong way.

Here are the most common mistakes to avoid from the beginning.

1. Promoting Products, You Don’t Believe In

If you don’t trust it, your audience won’t either. People can feel when something is forced.

Only recommend:

  • what you use
  • what you’ve researched
  • or what genuinely aligns with your message

Trust converts more than tactics ever will.

2. Joining Too Many Programs at Once

More options don’t equal more income. They create confusion.

When you try to promote everything:

  • your message becomes unclear
  • your content becomes scattered

Start focused. Build results. Then expand.

3. Expecting Fast Results

This is one of the biggest traps.

Affiliate marketing is not:

  • instant income
  • overnight success
  • or passive from day one

It’s a system that builds over time.

And when people don’t see immediate results…

They quit too early.

4. Dropping Links Without Strategy

Posting links is not a strategy. If there’s no context, no value, no reason for the reader to care…

  • the link won’t convert

Every link should be connected to:

  • a problem
  • a solution
  • or a recommendation that makes sense

5. Ignoring Data and Starting Over Too Often

Most people don’t give enough time to work.

They:

  • switch strategies too fast
  • abandon posts too early
  • and never track what’s actually happening

Instead of building momentum…

They keep restarting. That’s where progress gets lost.

6. Not Disclosing Affiliate Links

This is both ethical and required.

Always be clear:

“This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase through my links, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.”

It builds trust. And it protects you.

You can review the official FTC guidelines for affiliate marketing here.

The Affiliate Programs I Actually Recommend for Beginners

If you’re just getting started, you don’t need a long list of affiliate programs. You need the right ones.

These are the programs I recommend based on what I’ve personally used, explored, and found effective for beginners.

1. Amazon Associates — The Easiest Place to Start

Amazon is one of the most beginner-friendly platforms.

Why?

Because:

  • people already trust it
  • it has almost every product you can think of
  • and it’s easy to integrate into your content

You can recommend:

  • books
  • tools
  • lifestyle products
  • everyday essentials

My take: This is the easiest way to start building confidence with affiliate links.

Even small commissions matter in the beginning—because they prove the system works.

2. Wealthy Affiliate — Learn + Build at the Same Time

This is the platform I’ve been connected to since 2016.

And while my journey hasn’t been perfectly consistent, it’s one of the few platforms that actually teaches you how to build an affiliate marketing system from the ground up.

What it offers:

  • step-by-step training
  • website building tools
  • a structured path to follow

My take: If you need guidance and structure, this is a strong place to start.

Not because it’s magic.

But because it gives you a system, something most beginners are missing.

If you’re serious about learning how to build this the right way, this is where I recommend starting.

3. ShareASale / LTK — Expanding Into Brands

Once you get comfortable, platforms like ShareASale and LTK open the door to more brand partnerships.

You can find:

  • fashion brands
  • wellness products
  • digital services
  • niche-specific companies

My take: These are great once you understand the basics and want to expand your reach.

Not where you start.

Where you grow into.

Keep It Simple

You don’t need 10 platforms. You don’t need complexity.

You need:

  • one solid starting point
  • one system you understand
  • and consistent action

That’s what builds momentum.

Where to Start (And What to Do Next)

If you’ve made it this far, you already understand something most people don’t:

Affiliate marketing isn’t about luck. It’s about structure. And once you have the right structure, everything starts to make more sense.

If you’re ready to stop circling and actually build something that can pay you, here’s where to start:

1. Start With the Right System

If you want a structured, step-by-step way to build affiliate income, I recommend starting with Wealthy Affiliate.

It gives you:

  • a clear path to follow
  • training that actually walks you through the process
  • and a system you can build on over time

This is where you go from guessing… to building with direction.

If you’re still exploring options, you can also look into side hustles for beginners to find what fits you best.

2. Learn the Strategy Behind It

If you want to understand how to build authority and position yourself in today’s online space, start with my book:

Affiliate Authority in the AI Era

This will help you:

  • understand how content connects to income
  • build your platform with intention
  • and avoid the mistakes that slow most people down

3. Strengthen Your Discipline + Follow-Through

Because this only works if you stay consistent.

If you’re building while also working on yourself, my book:

The Complete You

  • will help you:
  • stay focused
  • build discipline
  • and follow through on what you start

Final Truth

You don’t need:

  • more ideas
  • more information
  • more waiting

You need:

  • a decision
  • a structure
  • and consistent execution

Your Next Step

Start here:

  • Choose one platform
  • Create your first piece of content
  • Follow a real system (not guesswork)

And then repeat.
