Who Am I?
I am a singer by nature. And I say by nature because I’m not trying to be a singer. I sing. I write songs. I’ve only recorded one of those songs and put it on the market.
I often get asked what kind of singer I am. Well, my answer is I am me. And I sing. I struggle to explain to people I’m not trying to be something I’m not. I want to be my unique, authentic self and sing these songs from my heart.
I perform cover songs but sing them as if they are my songs. With covers, I need to feel the music. I form a profound bond with the song and then convey it authentically.
For the past few years, I’ve been on a journey of self-discovery as a music artist. I’ve asked myself, who am I?
I’ll be transparent here. I am an evolving music artist. I’m still learning and figuring myself out. I am becoming accepting of myself as a singer who sings various genres of music. I’m not in the box that everyone wants to put me in. I’m not even in a box.
In this blog post, I am examining who you are and learning how to find yourself as a musician. Music is the lifeblood of the musician’s existence, regardless of skill level or popularity.
Your Integrity as a Person is Crucial.
Not all musicians live their lives aloud. Some prefer to keep their identity hidden. And has several reasons for keeping their identity unknown.
It is to protect them from personal criticism. Many musicians let it all hang out and care less about what people know or think they know.
But I’ve discovered that many music artists have yet to learn who they are, from the instruments to the vocals to the production.
Staying true to your integrity in the music industry can be challenging, especially when you’re a new artist trying to make a name for yourself. Despite numerous voices claiming to know what’s best for your career, staying true to your vision is crucial.
As a result, many musicians perish because they need more knowledge—yes, about themselves. It is essential as a human being. A music artist must scrutinize their inner world precisely, where we are and where we want to go.
Who is a Music Artist?
A music artist is an individual or group who creates, performs, and produces music. Music artists can encompass a wide range of genres, styles, and roles within the music industry.
They are responsible for composing songs, writing lyrics, and recording tracks. And often perform their music live for audiences.
Music artists can be solo performers, bands, duos, or larger ensembles. They may specialize in genres such as pop, rock, hip-hop, electronic, classical, jazz, country, R&B, etc.
The role of a music artist has evolved with the advancement of technology and the digital age, enabling artists to share their music globally through various platforms, such as streaming services, social media, and online distribution.
Why Should I Become a Music Artist?
Becoming a music artist is a path filled with passion, creativity, and potential for personal and professional growth.
In a world that thrives on the universal language of music. Aspiring musicians have a unique opportunity to share their stories—emotions, and perspectives with a global audience. At the same time, the journey might be challenging. The rewards of becoming a music artist extend far beyond the spotlight.
Why Are You Doing This?
If you desire to make music for your full-time gig, it is not for the faint of heart. One thing you must do is know yourself. Be true to who you are and your unique style of performance.
Have you taken a moment to ponder why you’re on this musical journey?
Is it because you want to be famous?
Is it for the girls, guys, drugs, or parties?
Is it for the money?
Or
Is it because music is your life, and you can’t see yourself doing anything else?
Or is it something like my reason? I am a natural-born singer. I grew up singing. It’s natural for me to like breathing.
It’s not something I’m trying to become. I am what I am.
Take a few minutes and write down why YOU want to take music seriously.
Who Are You?
James Brown is the Godfather of Soul. Michael Jackson is the King of Pop. Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Soul!
All the renowned artists of the 20th century had a clear idea of who they were and could communicate that to their fans. They are the epitome of authenticity, which translated into solid connections with their fans.
As a result, it translated into solid connections with their fans. Authenticity revealed itself through everything they did.
The evidence is that musicians are true to themselves.
When you think of Nicki Minaj, you think of corporate. When you think of Remy Ma, you think of independence.
You have the bands and artists who are anti-corporate and only want to keep the music true to its form.
Even if that doesn’t mean constant mainstream attention, so be it.
Artists like Nicki Minaj want to stay famous and relevant as a pop-culture symbol, so she’ll do what it takes.
If you’re still determining what you’re about, the first step is to remember why music speaks to you. Take the time to remember why you picked up an instrument, started singing, or put ideas to verse in the first place.
Think about that for a moment, reflect, and let’s do an exercise together. Gather a pen and paper or take notes on your phone or electronic device.
Question?

The unique battle we all face is keeping our inner child and fusing it with our adult work. It unites us, becomes indistinguishable, and gains approval from our peers.
Think about it. Every artist, entrepreneur, athlete, musician, inventor, and ruler since the origin of man. Has waged an aggressive battle against that last sentence.
To find yourself as a musician. Take the information you learned about yourself from the questions above. And imagine who you desire to be. Infuse it with the necessary steps to help you become your true, authentic self.

Tips to find yourself… In this article, we will delve into some compelling tips to help you find yourself while embarking on this exciting journey of self-discovery.
Tips to find yourself
1. Find Yourself Through Your Work.
You find yourself. Instead of thinking about what you want to become or what you can do, you become it. You live by working in that moment as your true self.
2. Ignore everyone.
What sound or lousy advice comes from years of evolution?
As we evolve, so does what is expected; it also becomes. We declare our identities to others without hesitation or shame.
As musicians, they are different.
Not only do we have our social behaviors that have evolved, but so has our music.
As you grow as a music artist, you enter a new phase. At this point, it’s best to be cautious of whom you listen to and what you listen to.
We care too much about what people think. Thus, we are afraid to mess up, do the wrong thing, or make mistakes. We fear judgment. To hell with all that! Listen when you need to listen and ignore what you need to forget.
3. More than anything else, accept yourself.
We’re repeatedly swamped by self-doubt, and the light of our authentic self does not shine. That light attracts every person, experience, and opportunity.
4. Perfect needs to be more accurate.

Figure out what motivates and makes you happy and how you connect to yourself. Don’t sacrifice those things – put them first. Ultimately, you can’t rely on anyone but yourself to bring true happiness.
7. Use everyone else as a mirror.
If you recognize what exists within you in other people, You will become aware of how and where to shift. If it’s positive, enhance it. If it’s negative, appreciate that it reared its ugly head so you could see it. But note to yourself that you’re cool with moving on without it. And then move on if necessary.

This is such an inspiring read! I love how you emphasize the importance of self-discovery in a musician’s journey, and how it’s more about the process than the destination. Your point about embracing vulnerability really stood out to me—it’s something I’ve found essential in connecting with both my music and my audience.
As someone who’s also navigating the path of finding my musical identity, I’ve noticed that influences from different genres sometimes pull me in multiple directions. Do you have any advice for balancing diverse musical inspirations while staying true to your own voice? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Hi, info/cos,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I’m delighted the post resonated with you, especially the parts about self-discovery and vulnerability—foundational aspects of the creative journey, especially for musicians like us.
Navigating multiple musical influences while staying true to your voice can sometimes feel like a tightrope. The beauty of music is that it expresses who you are, including all the different genres and styles that inspire you. I advise embracing those influences fully and giving yourself the space to let your unique sound emerge from them. Think of it as a mosaic—each piece matters, but the whole is distinctively yours.
Here’s something that’s worked for me: spend time exploring and experimenting with those genres without worrying too much about coherence. Let yourself freely absorb what speaks to you. Then, as you reflect on what you’re creating, start to notice patterns—what feels most authentic to you? What elements of those influences feel like they genuinely align with your voice? That’s where your sound lives, in that sweet spot between inspiration and authenticity.
Balancing multiple genres is less about “choosing” one and more about finding harmony in how they reflect different aspects of your musical identity. And remember, your voice will naturally evolve as you grow, so don’t be afraid to let your sound shift over time.
I’d love to hear more about your journey and how you’re integrating your influences. Keep trusting the process; I’m sure your voice will shine through!
Warmly,
Jamie London Clay
